Pure Michigan autumn

Fall in northern Michigan is quite the spectacle to behold.

We are moving further and further into the autumn season. Temperatures are falling and many of the trees are beginning to drop their leaves. Despite this, there is no reason to begin preparing for winter just yet, a northern Michigan fall is about as good as it gets when it comes to traveling the state and making memories with friends and family.

Whether you’re considering a weekend getaway, or just a day out with friends and family, I encourage folks who are planning a fall trip to consider taking advantage of the numerous family-friendly activities in the 37th District.

The most popular fall activity in northern Michigan is enjoying the fall colors. There are several scenic views and tours that allow access to the beautiful colors produced in Michigan’s numerous forests. The first week of October brings the beginning of the vibrant fall colors to northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, though the second week the colors will be at their peak and will make for a fantastic trip with friends and family.

Families may also want to visit a pumpkin farm and pick out a prized specimen for their children to carve and decorate the family porch with for Halloween, or attend the nearest harvest festival. The upcoming apple harvest means donuts and fresh apple cider, orchard tours and baked goods made from fresh Michigan apples.

For ideas on where to take the family, residents can visit www.michigan.org for help with planning a vacation in the state, including suggested activities, details on places to stay, local restaurants and upcoming events.

Also, my office can provide hard copies of the 2018 Pure Michigan Fall Travel Guide, which features numerous articles on fall color drives, hiking adventures, family getaways and much more. If you are interested in a hard copy of this year’s fall travel guide, please contact my office 517-373-2413 or via email at SenWSchmidt@senate.michigan.gov. All you need to provide is your name and address and my staff will get a copy in the mail to you right away.

Residents can also download a free, universally accessible digital version of the guide at www.michigan.org/travel-guide. The interactive guide can be accessed from a computer or via your smartphone or tablet.

I hope everyone has an opportunity to enjoy a day out in the crisp, autumn weather here in Pure Michigan.

Senate adopts Buy Nearby Weekend resolution

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Senate on Wednesday adopted Senate Resolution 186 to name Oct. 5-7, 2018 as Buy Nearby Weekend in the state of Michigan.

“The Buy Nearby campaign, which is in its sixth year, is about supporting local business and keeping more dollars in our communities,” said Sen. Wayne Schmidt, R-Traverse City, sponsor of SR 186. “Local retailers are responsible for 877,000 jobs in Michigan, and that number could continue to rise by increasing local purchases.”

Each year, the Buy Nearby campaign brings recognition to local businesses during the first weekend in October. Supporting local businesses, and job creators in general, plays an integral part in both growing and sustaining Michigan’s recovering economy.

On Oct. 5-7, many local businesses across the state will offer special events, sales and merchandise to attract customers to their locally owned and operated places of business. The hope is to teach consumers about the impact they have on Michigan’s economy when they support their local retailers.

“I think this is a great way to remind folks just how important it is to support their local mom and pop businesses,” Schmidt said. “I encourage shoppers in my district and across the state to participate and enjoy the many made-in-Michigan products with friends and family.”
